Ama's Picture Books

My grandmother recently left me her entire collection of picture books and children's literature. The entire collection is comprised of over 300 books. I am attempting to read as many as possible in 2014.

The Bamboo Cutter & the Moon Maiden: A Japanese Folk Tale - Teresa Pierce Williston, Dilleen Marsh

I liked this story a lot. In a tale like this you expect one of the princes to succeed and marry the princess. In this tale all the princes are foolish and the fail. The princess takes care of her parents until their deaths, after which she returns to the moon. Awesome.

Also, I loved the note from the illustrator at the end about how she chose a different bamboo to represent each prince's personality. I hadn't even noticed the bamboo borders when I was reading the book (I'm not the most visual person, I prefer words), so it was really interesting to go back to each illustration and see the work that was put into it.
