I'm pretty sure I read this book as a kid. I liked the story, but occasionally the illustrations didn't match with the text. Not a huge deal, but slightly distracting as I was reading.
The afterword was informative about the original story, but I didn't like the bit about the women's liberation movement. It feels like when (white) feminists try to take Hua Mulan's story and twist it to their beliefs. It ignores the cultural context of the story. But other than that, it's an enjoyable book.
